Kayak Storage
Kayak storage is an important consideration when you’re buying a new boat. If storing your kayak is going to be a headache it’s going to put you off using it and if you don’t store it correctly you’re going to shorten its lifespan.
Kayak racks store the boats at an angle taking the pressure off the hull. Proper long term storage is critical for proper inflatable kayak care. The best way to store your inflatable kayak is partially inflated (about one half) and out of continuous direct sunlight. Leave a fully inflated kayak out in the sun on a hot day and it can pop. You can store your inflatable kayak deflated, but you need to take special care. Moisture usually gets on the inside of your inflatable kayak tubes. This moisture on the inside of the tubes is not a big deal, except when you are storing your inflatable kayak deflated and rolled up for a long time. If there is just a little moisture, leave your kayak partially inflated for a few days in an area with low humidity. The bad news is that many casual inflatable kayak users roll the boat up as soon as the trip is over and don't do anything else until their next trip. Put an inflatable kayak on a cold river (or lake or ocean) and the air will contract. Inflatable Kayaks with an inner air bladder and an outer shell require extra care.
Proper long term storage is critical for proper inflatable kayak care. Improper storage, improper inflation and improper loading/unloading are the three primary ways of damaging your inflatable. If your boat in storage goes through frequent freezing and thawing, cracks can develop in the boat where moisture has gathered. The good news is that it's an easy problem to deal with before you put it in storage. Roll it up and put it in storage after the moisture has had a few days to dry out. That will minimize problems from improper storage. You also need to be careful that your kayak doesn’t get dented or deformed while in storage or being put into storage as these problems also affect performance and will eventually render your kayak useless.
Luckily there’s a range of products to choose from when it comes to kayak storage. Whatever storage system you use it’s got to be easy on your kayak and easy for you to use. A hanging storage solution can be a good option if you have a garage that just fits your car – and you still need the parking space. This storage option has thick webbing straps with quick release buckles that can be attached to rafters or eye bolts. A cheaper kayak storage solution is to get some kayak slings.
Of course kayak storage isn't just restricted to storing your kayak. You also need storage whist you're out in your kayak. The range and availability of storage options for your kayaking expeditions is also huge. There are specially shaped waterproof bags that will fit into the bow or stern of your kayak, which, when you are on foot become backpacks by attaching the supplied shoulder straps.
Additional storage can be gained with a clip on deck bag. If you're a kayak fisher a must have item would be a fish storage bag with a large insulated storage compartment to keep your catch fresh
